SmartVid for PHPmotion

We decided it was time that PHPmotion could handle video delivery to more than just your desktop. That’s why we developed a powerful addon which brings high quality video to your desktop, laptop, smartphone and tablet.

Display your videos on:

  • Computers
  • iPads
  • iPhones
  • Android based smartphones and tablets

SmartVid is compatible with JW Player, but can easily be adapted to other ones such as FlowPlayer. SmartVid HTML5 playback may not work with other players.

Your Videos – Your Choice:

Configure the quality, resolution and more in a convenient settings file allowing you to display videos how you want to. Default settings include SD and HD versions of your uploaded videos. All videos are converted into MP4 and can be converted with 1 or 2 pass encoding for better quality and smaller file sizes.

Watermark Images:

You can include your logo into your videos rather than just display it on the player – your logo will now stay on the video even if it is downloaded! A great way to increase site traffic when viewers are looking for the source of a video.

Smart Embedding:

Your embed code no longer breaks when you change player options or file locations. Use Youtube style embed codes which automatically detect and play videos across devices.

Requirements:

To use this addon you will need to check certain requirements on your server. If you are unsure how to do this or do not have access to, please contact your host.

  • PHPmotion v3+ (previous versions untested, but may work)
  • PHP 5+
  • FFMpeg 0.9 with the libx264 and libfaac codecs
  • MP4Box
  • exec PHP function
  • safe_mode off
  • php-cli

SmartVid Requirements Test File:

You can now test your server with the following download: SmartVid requirements checker. Simply unzip and upload smartvid-test.php to your server. Open the file in your browser and see what it says. We highly recommend checking these settings before purchasing, many hosts do not keep  non-vital software up to date on their servers and may not upgrade it for you.

Feature List:

  • Improved embedding code
  • Watermark video files
  • Display Youtube videos in your own player (requires JW Player and PHPmotion Youtube embedder add-on)
  • HTML5 Playback
  • MP4 h.264 conversions
  • iPhone, iPad and other mobiles supported (devices capable of playing back h264 MPEG video)

Potential Drawbacks:

Because of the conversion changes and new file formats and locations, other PHPmotion add-ons may not be 100% compatible with SmartVid. If you have any doubts. Feel free to contact us if you’re not sure.

You will use up more space than the standard setup as providing video for a wider range of devices requires several versions are created. By default a SD, HD and mobile version are created. It’s also likely that your bandwidth usage will go up as your videos are now viewable by potentially millions of other devices, but this isn’t really a bad thing ;)

How it works

SmartVid completely changes the conversion process relying on ffmpeg and MP4Box to generate optimized videos using h.264 and AAC codecs. Once converted videos are played as usual on your website. Depending on your player (you’re not required to use JW Player) you can show a HD icon to switch to the HD version. When viewing from a mobile device you will see the video image with links to the different video versions.

We’ve found this is the simplest way to cater for a wide range of mobile phones. Video playback has been tested successfully on:

This sounds great and I look forward to its availability!

  2. John says:

Ben, Is it necessary that one should use JWplayer for this ?
Another question, can it work with videos served from remote CDN services like S3 Amazon?

    • Ben - DH says:

Hi John, it isn’t 100% necessary to use JW Player. It would require a couple of changes, but it should be fairly straight forward to do.

I have been thinking of adding the ability to remotely host the video files so it will most likely become a feature at some point, but probably not in the initial version (all future updates are free of course so it won’t cost anymore when the feature does come out).

  7. rogger says:

    Hello,
Does jwplayer using pseudo streaming through xmoov.php will also play youtube videos on jwplayer or not?
    Thanks

    • Ben - DH says:

It isn’t setup with pseudo streaming, but you can modify the code used if you have this on your site. It supports playing videos from Youtube if you have the necessary add-ons installed on PHPmotion (ie. their Youtube embedder).

  8. rogger says:

Does it works on the nuevo player or not? I have nuevo player on my site..
    Thanks

    • Ben - DH says:

It would be possible to use it with the nuevo player, but you would need some knowledge of javascript, html, etc to set it up. Also if your player doesn’t support HTML5 playback videos will not show on non-Flash compatible devices.

If you need help installing SmartVid with your player you can choose the installation service during checkout. It would be a good idea to check if your hosting is compatible with the requirements checker script if you haven’t already done so.

      • rogger says:

        Thanks for your reply..
Last question How much time does it takes to convert videos presently 50MB .flv video takes 5-7 minutes to appear on my website after uploading. It would be better if converts fast.
        Thanks

        • Ben - DH says:

It’s difficult to say as it depends more on the actual machine and cpu restrictions that your host may have setup. It is most likely that it would take roughly the same amount of time.

If faster conversions are important then your best option would be to move to more powerful shared hosting, a VPS or a dedicated server. What is your current setup?

  9. rogger says:

    hello,
    I’m on the dedicated server.
    Thanks

    • Ben - DH says:

As you’re already on dedicated, the only way to see if you’ll have faster conversions would be to give it a try. We have a money back guarantee so if for some reason you weren’t happy with it you can have a full refund (excluding installation services though).

  10. rogger says:

ok i will try it tomorrow.
Thanks for your help. Now i’m going to work.Bye.Try tomorrow.
